Liberty Brewing launches a new brewpub

When I wrote about Guy Hews and his new brewery last October, I said, “Guy Hews just doesn’t have enough to do.” Well multiply that by ten, because not only does Guy work full time, have a family, make the beer and run his brewery in Liberty, Maine, he has gotten licensing to serve food, including making his own bratwurst, has added new beers to his original lineup and is making tables to replace the overstuffed chairs that look comfy but take up a lot of room.

Mark your calendars, because on May 16, 2015 Guy will host a grand re-opening of the expanded and jazzed up digs.

While you’re planning your trip, think about making a day of it. You may have to, since Liberty, Maine is a million miles from anywhere (Guy would argue with me). He told me some beer lovers begin at Oxbow in Newcastle, then trek to Liberty to taste his brews, then go on to Marshall Wharf in Belfast. From woods to the coast, over hill and dale, literally. And now you can have lunch in between. Just some of the menu items are the aforementioned bratwurst, sauerkraut and pickles made by Morse’s and a pub burger that gets the Pavlov mechanism going full bore.

On May 16th, however, you may just want to camp out for a few hours enjoying the great view of the Camden Hills from the deck, listen to the music and drink the beer.

The day we stopped by there was a trove of German-style beer mugs, scattered all over the store. I got a nice one for $1.50, made in Japan.
