The Journey Begins: Freeport, Maine Beer Adventure

I took the plunge today to get going on my beer book. Freeport is about an hour from where we live, and it’s not only home to LL Bean and a gazillion other outlets, but also features some nice beer destinations.

First stop: Gritty McDuff’s Brewpub on Route 1. This location of Gritty’s has been in Freeport for about fifteen years. We ordered a sampler of 6 beers, a great way to get a taste of a micro’s full menu of beers. For the two of us, it was more than enough to taste and drink during lunch.

We were starving. What else is new? I ordered the ale-battered haddock sandwich with coleslaw. The presentation was really pleasing, and in true low-carb style, I ate the fish and coleslaw and left the gigantic bun and trimmings. It was more than enough and delicious. The batter was light in color and texture, flaky and actually had a flavor. I am a batter fanatic, and can’t tolerate fish covered in puffed dough. This was perfect, clean-tasting and the fish itself was fresh and moist. Perfectly cooked.
